Engineering Standards and Specifications

Northey Tech is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of gas compressors and vacuum pumps supplying the global marketplace. Company product assurance is enabled by using relevant national and international engineering standards, specifications, and directives.

Engineering standards used by Northey include British Standards (BS), European Norm (EN) standards, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards, together with major company specifications. Such specifications are widely used by oil & gas companies to ensure the specific operational experience is reflected in new equipment design and build.

Through its involvement with international projects, Northey has developed a robust product assurance process to comply with customer standards and specifications. This means the company can compete on quality and cost with much larger manufacturers.

EU & UK directives

Northey’s product range is manufactured in compliance with relevant directives and is appropriately marked to show conformity for ATEX, Machinery and Pressure Equipment directives as required.

Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC)

This EU directive extends to machinery and its safety-related control system includes partly completed machinery. Compliance assessment against prescribed Essential Health & Safety Requirements (EHSRs), includes how they affect control systems.

The Northey product range has been risk-assessed against the EHSRs and found to be in compliance. An appropriate Declaration of Conformity is issued with other relevant documentation to support compliance.

Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU)

This EU directive is applicable to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar gauge pressure. Pressure equipment means vessels, piping, safety equipment and pressure accessories.

Northey products will normally form part of pressure equipment assembly and will be assessed on that basis. Depending on hazard level the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) category will be established.

Explosive Atmospheres Directive (2014/34/EU)

The ATEX Directive applies to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Equipment definition – any item containing or constituting a potential ignition source which requires special measures to be incorporated in its design and/or installation to prevent the ignition source from initiating an explosion in the surrounding atmosphere.

Suitable for use in Zone 1, internally and externally.

Quality Management System (QMS)

The ISO 9000 family of international standards has been developed to assist companies in implementing and operate effective quality management systems. Northey Tech is using ISO 9001 as guidance to review the existing company quality system with the objective of reaching broad compliance with EN ISO 9001-2008 in the near future.
