We have focused recently on Magnetic Drive technology, allowing us to build completely leak tight pumps. This stems from our work in the nuclear industry where we worked closely with British Nuclear Fuels to develop a canned motor pump for uranium enrichment. This successful product spurred further research, and we can now provide our entire range in 10-7 mbar. lt. sec leak tight magnetic drive form, working closely with our German partners DST.

We have also developed, and successfully patented a Hook and Claw machine using graphite rotors. The extreme thermal stability and excellent resistance to corrosion of these opens avenues where current product simply will not function. Although still at the R&D stage, this is an exciting programme, and we look forward to offering it on our production machines too

Northey invented the ‘Hook & Claw’ dry vacuum pump and compressor in the 1930’s. Northey Boyce, Northey Rotary Compressors and Northey Technologies Ltd are all descendants from the original company – a heritage we are proud of.

From the original applications of superchargers for cars and vacuum pumps for railway braking systems, we have developed and added to our product range. For over 70 years the company has specialised in the design and manufacture of compressors and vacuum pumps for handling a wide variety of gases. The gas is compressed between precision machined rotors so there is no metal-to-metal contact and no need for lubrication, meaning no risk of gas contamination. Simpler and less expensive than screw or non-lubricated piston machines, Northey Compressors are exceptionally reliable.

Northey Technologies is an (OEM) original equipment manufacturer of Gas Compressors and Vacuum Pumps supplying the global marketplace. Company product assurance is enabled by using relevant national and international engineering standards, specifications and directives.

Engineering Standards and Specifications

Engineering standards used by Northey include BS EN, ISO and ASME together with major company specifications. Such specifications are widely used by Oil and Gas companies to ensure specifice operational experience is reflected in new equipment design and build.

Northey through its involvement with international projects has developed a robust product assurance process to comply with customer standards and specifications. The company can therefore compete on quality and cost with much larger manufacturers.

EC Directives

Euorpean legislation is administered by directives eg Machinery, Atex and Pressure equipment.
Northey product range is manufactured in compliance with the relevant directives and is approtriately CE marked.

Machinery (2006/42/EC)

Directive coverage extended to machinery with its safety-related control system and includes partly completed machinery. Compliance assessment againsty prescribed ‘Essential health and safety requirements’ including where they affect control systems

The Northey product range has been risk assessed against the EHSR’s and found in compliance. An appropriate Declaration of Conformity is issued with other relevant documentation to support compliance.

Pressure Equipment (97/23/EC)

This directive is applicable to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies. With a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 barg. Pressure equipment means vessels, piping, safety and pressure accessories.

Northey products will normally form part of pressure equipment assembly and will be assessed on that basis. Depending on hazard level the PED category will be established. Recent Oil and Gas pressure equipment assembly was assessed at Category IV level and involved Notified Body approval. An extensive documentation package was issued to support this highest level categorisation.

Explosive Atmospheres (94/9/EC)

The ATEX directive applies to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Equipment definition – any item containing or constituting a potential ignition source which requires special measures to be incorporated in its design and/or installation to prevent the ignition source from initiating an explosion in the surrounding atmosphere.

ATEX assessment of equipment is undertaken against prescribed Essential Health and safety requirements before a Declaration of Conformity can be issued. Northey equipment has been ATEX assessed by Notified Body at Category 2 and T3 temperature level – suitable for use in Zone 1/2.

Quality Management System (QMS)

The ISO 9000 family of standards has been developed to assist companies implement and operate effective quality Management systems.

Northey Technologies are using ISO 9001 as guidance to review existing company Quality system with the objective of reaching broad compliance with EN ISO 9001-2008 in the near future.
